The first minutes were the most “complicated” of the entire commitment. La Selecta opted for high and intense pressure and Argentina had a hard time creating valuable partnerships and generating a fluctuating and incisive game circuit. But that lasted just 15 minutes, until the team led by Lionel Scaloni entered the game and became far superior to its rival. The first goal came at 16′ and it was the only moment in which football qualities were equal: through the stopped ball. Di María took a great free kick from the left and Cristian ‘Cuti’ Romero rose to head the ball and open the scoring on North American territory.

The second goal was scored by Enzo Fernández, who knew how to perfectly read a great Albiceleste attack to appear at the far post and, after a chance rebound off a Salvadoran defender, make it 2-0 almost at the end of the first stage. It was the third goal for the Chelsea footballer (just turned 23) with the national team shirt in just 19 games, in which he also distributed three assists.

The second half brought with it two changes, one of them highly acclaimed by the public: Alejandro Garnacho replaced Nicolás González, at the same time that Nicolás Otamendi entered in place of Enzo Fernández. The team, then, was formed as follows: Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martínez; Nehuén Pérez, Cristian ‘Cuti’ Romero, Nicolás Otamendi, Nicolás Tagliafico; Leandro Paredes, Rodrigo De Paul, Giovani Lo Celso; Ángel Di María, Lautaro Martínez and Alejandro Garnacho.
